The experience

This is a two-hour guided walk after dark at Sukia Park, a private reserve in Manuel Antonio. The nocturnal forest is a completely different place from the daytime one, and a good guide with a strong light is the difference between walking past the wildlife and actually seeing it.

The private setting is the point. It is more intimate and more controlled than walking the public edges of the national park, which makes for safer footing and more reliable sightings.

With a flashlight in hand, you follow your guide along the trails as the forest comes alive. Frogs, snakes, lizards, mammals, insects, and spiders all turn up after dark, and your guide points them out while explaining their nocturnal habits. Every walk is a little different depending on what is moving that night.

At some point your guide will ask everyone to switch off their lights for a moment. The chorus of chirps, croaks, and rustling under the moon is the part people remember. Pair it with a daytime visit to Manuel Antonio National Park to see the same forest in two completely different moods.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Your naturalist guide leads with a high-powered light, the trails at Sukia Park are well maintained, and the focus is on wildlife, not wilderness survival.

Red-eyed tree frogs, snakes, Jesus Christ lizards, sleeping birds, stick insects, and tarantulas are among the most common. Every walk is different.

Long pants, closed shoes, and a light long-sleeve layer. Bring insect repellent. The guide carries the light, so you just follow along.

Light rain often improves frog sightings, so we only cancel in extreme weather. Bring a light rain jacket just in case.

Ages six and up generally love it, and toddlers three and under join free. Very young children can find the dark and the insects a lot, so use your judgment.

The guided walk is about two hours, and the full outing is roughly three hours including the short drive each way.
